Original Bounty
In “The $$60,000,000,000 Man” (Trigun Volume 1, Chapter 1), the bounty poster for Vash the Stampede is shown. The value of the bounty is set at $$60,000,000,000: sixty billion double dollars. He may be brought in dead or alive.
The reason for the bounty is described: “The worst kind of outlaw, and an unrivaled killer. Suspected in the murder of Count Revenant Vasquez. Believed capable of G-grade damage. Personally able to cause mass destruction.” Based on this, it appears the bounty was set largely in reaction to the destruction of July and the apparent death of William Conrad under his alias of Count Revenant Vasquez.
There is no information on which part of No Man’s Land’s government set the bounty, or where Vash should be turned in to receive it.
Localized Disaster
In the “Trigun Pilot” (Trigun Volume 2, Bonus 2), there is a radio announcement that the federal government has announced the launch of an investigation into Vash and are considering declaring him the world’s first “localized disaster.”
At the end of the pilot, it is described that soon after the events of the issue, the government will declare Vash to be mankind’s first “localized disaster.”
Bounty Invalidated
In “Hard Puncher” (Trigun Volume 1, Chapter 3), Meryl Stryfe announces to the town of April City (in the region of Valdour) that the federal government has formally declared Vash the Stampede an officially designated localized disaster. She also tells them that this has the effect of invalidating his bounty.
For the rest of the manga, until “Never Ending Song” (Trigun Maximum Volume 14, Chapter 8), Vash does not have a bounty on his head.
DON’T TOUCH Poster
We see another version of Vash’s bounty poster in “Hero Reborn” (Trigun Maximum Volume 1, Chapter 1). It appears to be labeled “DON’T TOUCH”. As Vash’s bounty is no longer valid, this may be a message: no attempts should be made to capture Vash.
Earth Federation Bounty
In “Never Ending Song” (Trigun Maximum Volume 14, Chapter 8), it is revealed that Earth Federation Security Forces has put out a new bounty for Vash the Stampede. While the information is not shown on the poster, later in the chapter Vash comments on having a bounty set at $$60,000,000,000: sixty billion double dollars. This could be in reference to the new bounty, the old one, or both.
The conditions of the bounty are not shown. However as Earth Federation seeks to question Vash, it is likely that they want him brought in alive.
