Original Tumblr Post: The Eye of Michael vials
The Eye of Michael vials
Since we’re talking about the Eye of Michael vials, I want to give my own two cents on it with what I’ve noticed from the manga. This post will include major volume 10 spoilers.
As we see, they cause rapidly increased healing to an unnatural degree. They also cause steam to rise from the healing wounds, making it easy to assume that some level of body temperature increase is happening.
Now, according to Chapel he can’t personally use vials anymore, as his body can’t take another dose. We also see the consequences of taking several vials at once, only adding another layer of danger to the vials.
There is a set amount of vials that you can take in a single lifetime, as each time a member uses a vial they age rapidly as well. We see this in how quickly Chapel grew to look older and older, from firstly shooting himself to protect Razlo, then recovering from Wolfwood’s assassination attempt. Sure, despite the vials and the healing, Chapel was unable to regain his ability to walk. Maybe he never used the vials to recover from Wolfwood’s attempt at his life, perhaps he had to survive the old fashioned way.
It is possible the total number of vials anyone can use is five, as they’ve been given a holster that holds five vials, perhaps the only vial they are ever given. Of course, Wolfwood burns through his extremely quick within a short period of time, as he adepts to a more merciful way of life, sacrifice his own lifespan for the sake of sparing his enemies.
But never can one take more than a single vial at the time, as two is enough to overwork the body and cause heart failure, which is eventually what causes Wolfwood’s death.
It is clear the vials cause massive trauma to the body of those who drink it, both causing momentary rapid aging and posing a risk of total organ failure.
