What's The Story?

The Stargate program has a number of goals. Some were set down at the start, while others have evolved through necessity. Here's a quick breakdown of the various typical mission types, with examples of episodes throughout the seasons that typify such missions.

First Contact

Purpose: Meet and greet. Seek new alliances against the Goa'uld. Exchange cultural data, information, technology.
Problems: Germ exchange. Hostile natives. Disabled Stargates. Wrong foot.
Classic Episodes: The Broca Divide, Thor's Hammer, Prisoners, The Gamekeeper, The Fifth Race, One False Step, Demons, New Ground, The First Ones, Prodigy, Entity, Red Sky.

Acquiring Technology

Purpose: Get ahold of advanced weaponry, energy generators, metallurgy, and any other useful technologies.
Problems: Reluctant trade. Dangers of unfamiliar technology.
Classic Episodes: The Nox, Enigma, Message In A Bottle, Spirits, Learning Curve, The Other Side, Upgrades, Tangent, Absolute Power, Double Jeopardy.

Defense Against Invasion

Purpose: Keep Earth safe from alien invasion. Boot presently invading aliens back through the Stargate. Blow up enemy ships in orbit.
Problems: Usually involves skin-of-teeth escapes. Preparation nigh impossible.
Classic Episodes: The Enemy Within, Hathor, Within The Serpent's Grasp, The Serpent's Lair, Show And Tell, Foothold, Nemesis, Small Victories, Divide And Conquer.

Personal Missions

Purpose: Rescue. Revenge. Rebellion.
Problems: Endangerment of life and limb. Pissed-off Goa'uld. Endangered loved ones.
Classic Episodes: Children Of The Gods, The Torment Of Tantalus, Family, Secrets, Forever In A Day, Jolinar's Memories, The Devil You Know, Maternal Instinct, Crossroads, The Curse, Beast Of Burden.

Politics, On- And Off-World

Purpose: Make alliances with powerful individuals and cultures. Preserve preferred command organization from antagonistic influences.
Problems: Hostile individuals and skeptical cultures. Covert conspiracies turn the red phone into a paperweight.
Classic Episodes: Politics, Touchstone, Fair Game, Shades Of Grey, Watergate, Chain Reaction, Between Two Fires.
