Stargate/Tau'ri Technology

Cartouche

A series of glyph, or symbols, used to dial a planet's address on the Stargate network. Daniel Jackson discovered a room filled with such addresses during his time on Abydos, and the SGC uses them to chart new worlds.

DHD

Dial Home Device. The DHD contains 38 glyphs and a large orange central dome. It controls the Stargate and is used to "dial" addresses by pressing the unique sequence of glyphs a location corresponds to, and then pressing the center dome to complete the sequence and activate the Stargate.

Dialing Program

The homemade version of the DHD created by the Stargate Program to dial the Stargate. The dialing program sends commands to the Stargate, spinning the inner track and then "locking" the glyph chosen before moving on to the next glyph in the sequence.

FRED

Field Remote Expeditionary Device. The FRED carries supplies for field units on the other side of the Stargate. With six wheels, it can navigate almost any terrain.

GDO

Garage Door Opener. The GDO a remote signalling device worn on the wrist that is used to transmit security codes to the SGC. These codes verify the identity of the incoming travellers, and deactivate the iris. All codes are changed regularly.

The Iris

The micro-thin, titanium (and later titanium-trinium alloy) shield that is used to keep unwanted intruders from entering the SGC via the Stargate. For security purposes, it is generally kept closed until a valid GDO signal is sent through an incoming wormhole. When it is closed, unwanted intruders are unable to fully re-form upon exiting and are killed.

MALP

Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe. The MALP is an exploratory, mobile probe used to determine the safety and general conditions of the environment on the other side of the Stargate. It can transmit data two-ways through a wormhole, and in addition to microphone and speakers, it houses a video camera and a variety of sensors. When a wormhole is open, the MALP can also be used as a relaying station for radio signals between SGC teams and Earth.

Naquadah

Naquadah is an extremely useful metal used across the universe. The Stargate is composed of it and most Goa'uld technology utilizes it. The metal is so important that many planets' sole task is to mine it, as was the case on Abydos. The SGC uses naquadah in the form of a reactor to create large amounts of energy in a portable format.

The Stargate

The Stargate is a round portal that can instantaneously transport an object from one point in space to another by generating an artificial wormhole. A wormhole is created between any two Stargates when one Stargate dials the address of another Stargate. A Stargate uses 6 of 38 symbols, representing star constellations, to locate another Stargate and then uses a final 7th symbol, unique to each Stargate, as its point of origin.

All together, the Stargate contains 39 symbols, one of which represents a point of origin unique to that Stargate, and has 7 chevrons that are used to lock on to Stargate symbols and dial another Stargate.

UAV

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Remote-controlled small aircraft used to explore larger distances away from offworld Stargates. UAVs tend to get lost, leaving SG-1 to trudge over half the planet to pick them up again.

Wormhole

Gate travel via wormhole is one way. A person cannot go through the gate, leave it open, and then step back through it. The gate has to be stopped and then restarted from the opposite planet in order to travel back to the other end. The only thing thing that can travel two ways through the gate are radio waves (which the MALP transmits back to Earth).
