Many people are only familiar with Stargate on the big screen. If you're one of them, here's how the transition was made from film to television series. At the end of the Stargate feature film, after the two men destroy the evil alien Ra and generally save the world, Colonel Jack O'Neill leaves Daniel Jackson on Abydos to live in wedded bliss with Sha're and to teach the Abydans their lost history and writings. So how did they get from there to fighting Goa'uld? The pilot of Stargate SG-1 set the stage. We find out that Ra was only one of many human-possessing pseudo-deitites called Goa'uld when a new alien, Apophis, comes through the Stargate. General Hammond, the commander of the facility where the device is stored, recalls Jack, who had retired from the military after the Abydos mission, to question him about the truth of his mission reports. It turns out that, in order to let Daniel stay on Abydos, Jack has told his superiors that Daniel was killed in action. Hammond calls Jack's bluff by threatening to send a nuclear bomb through to Abydos just in case the alien who came through the gate was really Ra after all. Jack folds and admits Daniel is still alive, and Hammond sends Jack to go retrieve the man from off-world. When Jack and his team, now called SG-1 and including new member Captain Sam Carter, arrive on Abydos, all is well and Ra is still dead. Daniel reveals to the military team that there is a map room listing other planets the Stargate can reach, so the new alien could have come from anywhere. While they are away, the Abydans are attacked by Apophis and Sha're and Skaara, Daniel's wife and brother, are abducted. Jack tells Daniel that the only way he can get them back is to return to Earth and work with the Stargate program. Back on Earth, Jack and Daniel bond over beer and Daniel works his way onto Jack's team to rescue his family. SG-1 arrive on the planet, Chulak, where Sha're and Skaara were taken, but they are too late. Sha're has been taken over by a Goa'uld, Apophis' consort Amaunet. SG-1 is captured, and Skaara is chosen as a host as well, for Apophis' son, Klorel. Apophis' First Prime, Teal'c, impressed with SG-1's sense of freedom and use of technology, frees the team and joins them in escaping to Earth. When they are back safely, Jack promises Daniel that they will find Sha're and Skaara and find a way to save them. Jack, Daniel, Sam, and Teal'c, the new SG-1, walk away from the Stargate, and their adventures begin. Stargate SG-1 the series begins with two primary goals: save Sha're and Skaara, and fight the Goa'uld. However, the early missions are primarily about basic exploration and first contact, as the people of Earth knew very little about what lay on the other side of the Stargate. Slowly, and not without casualties, the Tau'ri (as the people of Earth are known to the universe) make allies and gain experience about exploration, interstellar politics, and the Goa'uld. At the same time, the members of the SGC, or Stargate Command, must fight to preserve the integrity of their program and keep their alien friends (and their technology) safe from the heartless NID program.
