Rocks vs. Artifacts

"Believe it or not, Jack, for some of us, puttering around in a roomful of artifacts is restful."
"Rocks," Jack grumbled.
-- From C. R. Chancey's Lost In Translation

"Daniel, I think we...and the SGC, can manage for a few weeks while you go and…dig up rocks."
He sighed. "They're artifacts, Ja—"
"OK, very very old rocks."
-- From Gnine's Necessity

"YES! Your precious little geek wouldn't leave his rocks..."
"Artifacts." Jack replied, functioning now on auto-pilot.
-- From PHO's The Devil To Pay

"I sent Danny boy out, he probably would have been sidetracked by some rock lying on the road or something.”
“Artifacts, Jack.”
“Yeah, yeah.”

-- From Yum@'s Who Drank All the Coffee?

For something that turns up in one variation or another in such a large number of Stargate fan fiction, you'd think that Jack calling Daniel's artifacts "rocks" was something that had appeared on the show itself. But it's never been heard in a single episode, never mentioned or even referred to. Though it's often used as a key example of Jack and Daniel's repartee, it's completely a fan invention.

Yum@, one of the first Stargate fic writers, helped popularize Jack and Daniel's running gag by using it prominently in her stories, but the original source was a story by Kaliope.
