Jack's Scar
 |
The scar on Jack O'Neill's eyebrow,
seen here in "The Light": the
origin of this small but oft-noted nick has been shrouded in mystery
for many a season. But some careful visual research via the wonderful
P3X595 site has
revealed the truth at last! |
| |
|
 |
Some have placed the origin of
the scar in the season one episode "The
Broca Divide." Jack does get a scratch above his
left eye in that episode, thanks to The Touched, however it's not
in the right location. In fact, it's not even on his eyebrow! |

|
 |
But some people remember Jack having
the scar back in season one after all. Sure, he does, but only in
the mirror universe of "There But For The
Grace Of God." And it's a mirror image scar of our Jack's
eventual scar. |

|
 |
Proof that Jack still doesn't have
the scar by the end of season two: here he is in "Show
And Tell" with an untouched brow. But that's about to
change... |

...with "1969."
At the very beginning of the episode, Jack mouths off to the soldiers
in the missile silo and gets a swift thump in the face with the
butt of a rifle for his troubles. From a transcript of the episode:
Sergeant: "The next person who shoots
his mouth off gets this, (meaning the gun) is that clear?"
Above them, an intercom switches on.
Man: (over intercom) "Take them to the holding room."
Sergeant: (glancing up) "Yes, sir."
O'Neill: "No, take me to your C.O."
At that, the soldier swings his rifle around, slamming the butt
of the rifle into O'Neill's face. O'Neill goes down from the force
of the blow.

And to show that it wasn't just
a scratch, the very next episode "Out Of
Mind" has the scar, faded but still present, and so it
has remained to this day. |
As a bonus, from Hellblazer's
transcript of
Frontier #22, an interview with Richard Dean Anderson's makeup artists
Jan Newman has the history behind the scar and how it's done:
The finishing touch is a nick in
one eyebrow, giving the impression of a scar. It's based on a gash Newman
created when Anderson's character was bashed during an adventure a couple
of seasons ago [in 1969].
"He rather likes the battle-scar look," says Newman, "so
I trim it up regularly."
