Pop Culture Addict

Teal'c and Jerry Springer: a match made in heaven? Evidence suggests that it's possible.

A stranger in a strange landTeal'c originally feared the people of his adopted planet. His earliest exposure to Earth culture was a not the most friendly introduction possible: during "Cold Lazarus," he turneds on his new television and began flipping through the channels, seeing, in succession: police fighting rioting in the streets ("no word yet on any casualties"); traders on the stock market floor ("the bull was violated today by bears leaving a sea of red behind them"); a chaotic heavy metal music video; and scenes from Middle East warfare ("and no one can say how it started in the first place"). He then told Daniel and Sam that "Your world is a strange place," to which Daniel replied: The Terminator"So's yours." Later that episode, he refused to leave his staff weapon behind when going into town because "I have seen your world. I will need it."

Slowly, Teal'c began to get used to the Tau'ri. During "Bane" he was confronted with some bewildering street slang courtesy of a gaggle of street kids, but had other things on his mind. He showed signs of acclimation by the end of the episode, however, when he engaged in a water gun fight. The first time he showed a strong interest in Earth culture is "Window Of Opportunity" while looping with Jack. This may be partially attributed to the fact that his only alternative was mind-numbing Headless alien in topless barboredom only broken by the occasional indignity. Whatever the reason, he got to learn to juggle and play a few rounds of golf, in full attire.

"Point of No Return" had him fascinated with the vibrating "magic fingers" bed; after demanding more quarters from Jack, he lay back with a huge grin on his face as the bed shook. He was also shown reading the Whistle Blower tabloid magazine. In "The Curse," Daniel caught Jack reading an issue of a different tabloid, Glimmer, and Jack explained himself by stating "It's, um... Teal'c's into this stuff," revealing that Teal'c is a regular reader.

Yee haw!"Ascension" was where his fascination with pop culture really became full blown. Jack told Sam that Teal'c had seen Star Wars 8 times and was eagerly anticipating a 9th viewing. Teal'c wore an extremely cheesy cowboy outfit, complete with ten-gallon hat, and told Jack that he had "read of a place where humans do battle in a ring of jello." Clearly by this point the infection was full blown.

Reminds me of the lady on the banana logoTeal'c's questionable taste in casual clothes also manifested itself in "Wormhole X-Treme!" with some rather... fruity patterns. Though technically he was undercover, it's apparent that the costuming was left up to him. Pink from the neck down, with a gold ring in one ear and a fruit-laden bandana on his head, Teal'c was somewhat less than subtle in his choice of costume.

Given that Teal'c professes great interest in jello wrestling, cowboy outfits, cheesy supermarket tabloids, pop science fiction films, and some extremely ugly clothing, it's not much of a leap to consider that he would be very interested indeed in such things as afternoon talk shows. Teal'c has never shown interest in or referred much to American television on the show however (apart from his initial fearful viewing), so while he is certainly very involved with pop culture, any specific quirks past what has been shown are the inventions of the writers.
