Terminology And Ratings Key Fandom is a complex place, full of unusual terms and definitions. Use this A-Z key as your guide to navigating the many sections of the Rec-Å-Thon. PG :: MPAA rating for media where parental guidance is suggested. PG-13 :: MPAA rating for media suitable for children 13 and above. R :: MPAA rating for media suitable for anyone 17 and above. NC-17 :: MPAA rating for media suitable for adults only. [ top ] Canon :: Character or plot information that is taken directly from the source material, such as the TV show itself. Fandom :: The community of people (fans) who enjoy a particular show or other media, such as Stargate SG-1. Fan Fiction :: Stories written by fans within the universe of their fandom. Also written as ff, fanfic, or fic. Pairing :: A relationship between two characters; a couple. Delineated with the "/" marker between the names of the characters, as in Sam/Daniel. Rec :: A recommendation for a story that is considered worth reading. Spoilers :: Information from or references to specific episodes. You wouldn't want to have them ruined for you before you see them, now would you? [ top ] Action/Adventure :: Stories containing plots that involve fighting, interplanetary intrigue, or other dangerous activities. Angst :: Stories containing significant quantities of introspection with a depressed or otherwise emotionally distraught slant. AU :: Stories that are set in an alternate universe. Generally the characters are the same but elements in their history or present have been altered. Crossover :: Stories that join together characters from multiple sources/fandoms. A Stargate SG-1/X-Files crossover might have Mulder investigating reports of the Goa'uld on Earth. Denial :: Stories that refute the events of the season 5 episode "Meridian" by featuring Daniel leaving SG-1 at the end of season 5 in an alternate manner or creating a different ending to the series. Drama :: Stories containing a state, situation, or series of events involving interesting or intense conflict of forces. Episode :: Stories based within, after, or around actual episodes of the show, also known as missing scenes. Those that directly follow the last scene of an episode are also known as episode tags. Established Relationship :: Where a romantic pairing is already in existence before the story starts. First Time :: Where a romantic pairing is formed during the story. Gen :: Stories without any romantic pairings. Het :: Stories with romantic heterosexual pairings. (e.g. Sha're/Daniel) Humor :: Stories containing a strong comical or satirical element. The funny stuff. H/C :: Stories where a character is injured, and another (or others) comforts them. Often seen with Whumping or Episode fic. Pre-Slash :: Where members of a Slash pairing are dealing with the existence of their feelings for each other. Lumped under UST for use on this site. Romance :: Stories involving two characters falling or being in love. Series :: Stories that are part of a larger sequence of stories. Numbered in order. Slash :: Stories with romantic homosexual pairings. (e.g. Jack/Daniel) Smarm :: Stories containing schmoozy comfort and/or gratuitous character bonding. UST :: Unresolved sexual tension; the state between members of a romantic pairing prior to (or in lieu of) a First Time. Pre-Slash is lumped under this term for use on the site. Vignette :: Very short stories, often consisting solely of introspection. Whumping :: Physical and/or mental character abuse. Most commonly seen in Stargate SG-1 fandom in the form of Danny-Whumping. WIP :: Work In Progress. A story that is still being written by the author at time of posting. [ top
